Glossary of Construction Terms

Angle Bay Window: Window with a flat center with angled sides that angle out from the house 

Awning Window: Window hinged on the top and open outward from the bottom, allowing ventilation, often placed higher on walls 

Bridging:  Supports or bracing between horizontal floor joists at spans of 10 feet or more 

Buck Frames/Lumber:  Rough widow and door frames fabricated on job site from 2×6 material 

Building Wrap: Synthetic material used as air and moisture barrier  

Casement Windows: Window hinged on the side and crank open outward to the left or right allowing for full top to bottom ventilation 

Dormer: A window, or even a room, projection from a sloping roof (can be dog dormer or shed dormer) 

Double Hung Windows: Window with double vertical sliding sash. 

Fascia: Also, fascia board. The trim board around a roof’s edge 

Flashing:  Sheets of metal/aluminum used to weatherproof the deck to house connection 

Floor Sheathing: The first covering of 4×8 boards on the floor that you adhere your final floor materials to 

Gable End: The end of the building, often vertically triangular in shape  

 Insulated Low “E” windowLow-E, or low-emissivity, glass minimizes the amount of infrared and ultraviolet light that comes through your glass, without minimizing the amount of light that enters your home and it reflects heat 

Joist Hanger:  Made of galvanized metal construction, is attached to girder or log wall to carry a joist 

Log Skirting: Two courses of log siding used to blend box foundation or deck system with the first course of logs 

Partition Framing (stud): Upright framing materials for room dividers, 2×4 or 2×6 (used for plumbing walls 

Polyfoam Gasket: Gasket tape that provides a seal against dust, light, air, and moisture 

Pre-Cut Logs: Logs that are pre-cut to exact lengths so that the log wall receives windows, doors. etc. (logs are cut for the window and door openings and the corners you select)  

Ridge Vent: A system of metal vents installed along the roof ridge to allow ventilation of the attic 

Roof Sheathing: The first covering of boards (comes in 4×8 sheets) on the roof that you adhere your roofing materials to 

Roof Underlavment: Another term for the roofing felt installed over roof decking before the shingles are installed 

S4S Carry BeamsSurface four sides (smooth), beams that carry the roof load of a porch that the rafters sit on  

Sill Plate:  The horizontal framing member, 2×6 or 2×4 treated lumber bolted to the foundation) to which the floor system is attached.  

Sloped Hanger:  Galvanized steel hanger that connects rafters to LVL ridge beam in vaulted roof structures 

Soffit: The underside of a roof’s overhang  

Soffit Vent: 2″ aluminum strip vent for attic ventilation  

Stair stringerThe structural framing that creates and supports a set of stairs, made from dimensional lumber 

Structural Ridge: one that carries a structural load; i.e. that helps support the roof load  

Temporary Tread: The part of the stairs that you step (tread) on to up the stairs, used during the construction phase to not damage permanent treads 

Termite Shield: Flashing-like material used to prevent termites from entering wood walls 

T&G: Tongue and groove 

Window Grilles:  The mullions of dividers that snap into place to look like window panes
